Human Placenta is Traded on Chinese Black Market

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – Hong Kong’s Apple Daily reported on Tuesday that eastern China is the scene of illicit trade in human placentas. And the practice is “booming”, with numerous quantities being sold each year, despite a ban in place since 2005.
  • The provinces of Jiangsu, Henan, and Anhui are where the traders secretly operate, acquiring placentas discarded by hospitals and funeral homes throughout most of the nation.
  • According to the newspaper, a trader indicated that last year one of the irregular groups had collected at least 130,000 placentas. The cost per unit is $12.30 to be sold to traditional Chinese medicine providers, generating great economic benefits.
  • The commercialization of placentas has achieved great scope, so much so, that today they have a place in the market of electronic platforms, with costs of $69 and $89 approximately.
  • For this reason, specialists in traditional Chinese medicine assure that the properties contained in the placenta are excellent for immunological treatments.
  • It should be noted that the production process carried out by traditional medicine pulverizes the placenta into capsules that can be ingested and cure diseases such as tuberculosis and hypohemia.
  • For its part, the Chinese Communist Party is working to position this brand in the market, which is generating great economic benefits.
  • Finally, although there is a measure that prohibits this type of trade, no sanctions have been enforced, while the product is currently gaining market position.
