Antony Blinked Warns Russia to Stop Gas Pipeline Project

  • By John Deloria
  • (General Dispatch) – Secretary of State Antony Blinken told a media outlet to stop the Nord Stream 2 pipeline megaproject, warning that countries involved in the project will receive US sanctions.
  • Nord Stream 2 is the second phase of one of the Kremlin’s most ambitious projects aimed at supplying energy to Germany and from there to other European Union countries.
  • “As several U.S. administrations have made clear, this pipeline is a Russian geopolitical project aimed at dividing Europe and weakening European energy security,” Blinken said.
  • What is worrying about this project for the U.S. is the dependence that this pipeline could cause European countries to become dependent on Russia, as well as the damage it could cause to the environment.
  • Blinken said that the Trump administration was determined to paralyze this work, apart from making sanctions to those countries that still support the project, for that reason Biden said he will still maintain the measure imposed by former President Donald Trump.
  • The Trump administration managed to paralyze the work for more than 1 year and warned to apply sanctions to the companies that had made contracts for the construction of the project.
  • The project involves six companies Gazprom, which is the leading company under the command of the Kremlin, and five European companies: OMV, Wintershall, Dea, Engie, Uniper and Shell.
  • The Biden administration has tried to advise Europe that this project will be “one of the worst deals” apart from increasing Russian influence in the region.
