Racial Inequality in Vaccine Supply Demonstrated by U.S. Health Care System

  • By James Kravitz
  • (General Dispatch) – The U.S. Health System is proving to be “defragmented” in relation to the way the covid-19 vaccine was distributed, in which the Afro-descendant population was left out.
  • Great inequality employs the Health System, said Stephen B. Thomas, professor at the School of Health. Thomas, professor at the School of Public Health of the University of Maryland. Referring to the fact that this portion of the U.S. population is marginalized.
  • Of a total of 113 million doses, only 14% have been administered to residents of counties with lower per capita rates, many of whom are unemployed and truly poor, the professor said.
  • At least part of this disparity can be attributed to the long-standing lack of trust in the U.S. health care system among communities of color, said Thomas, who was not part of the CDC research.
  • The distribution of Chinese virus vaccines needs to be done in an equitable manner along demographic, rather than socioeconomic, lines.
  • It should be noted that people of color are also likely to be infected and at risk of death from covid-19, so this important segment of society should not be overlooked.
  • In the meantime, a group of people have taken on the task of organizing meetings to listen to the different opinions of the people of the communities at risk, and to prepare the ground for the vaccination to arrive soon.
  • Concretely, the health agencies involved, together with the stakeholders, are mobilizing human and technical resources so that the communities receive the vaccination as soon as possible.
