North Korea Ends Diplomacy with Malaysia

  • By Steph. G. Halston.
  • (General Dispatch) –   Kim Jong-un’s government ended diplomacy with Malaysia after failing to extradite Citizen Mun Chol Myong. In response the Malaysian government asked North Korean embassy officials to leave the country.
  • Businessman Mun Chol Myong was extradited to the United States after he was charged with money laundering and shipping luxury goods that were not allowed in North Korea.
  • Malaysia made the decision to extradite him to comply with an agreement it has with the U.S. to contribute to the integrity of the global financial system and avoid possible sanctions if it were to support North Korea.
  • The North Korean foreign ministry sent a letter to the Malaysian embassy saying that “On March 17, the Malaysian authority committed an unforgivable crime, in the end, of forcibly handing over the innocent DPRK [North Korean] citizen to the United States by accusing him of being a ‘criminal’.”
  • The North Korean government singled out the U.S. as a hostile country that seeks ways to assault and punish the Korean country in various ways, and regrets that countries like Malaysia are joining its cause.
  • The North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that Mun Chol Myong was innocent, and complained about the U.S. policy of prosecuting a man who was only engaged in commerce.
  • The Malaysian Foreign Ministry regretted the attitude adopted by North Korea “Malaysia denounces the decision as hostile and unconstructive, disrespectful of the spirit of mutual respect and good neighborly relations among members of the international community.”
  • Now North Korea warned the US to beware of the actions it has committed against Kim Jong-un’s government and on the other hand sent a statement through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “From this very moment, the Malaysian authority will assume full responsibility for all consequences between the two countries”.
