Waste Materials Used to Prevent Covid-19 Attempt Against Wildlife

  • By William Silgueiro
  • (General Dispatch) – According to a study recently published on the Brill website, the materials used to prevent covid-19 represent a major threat to wildlife, in relation to the large mass proportion of discarded face masks and gloves.
  • The study indicates that every corner of the planet is littered with non-biodegradable waste. Due to the advent of the pandemic that forces people to use personal protective equipment.
  • The findings have been found in both marine and terrestrial life. During the development of the research it was possible to observe how a fish was trapped in a glove that floated, in the same way as a bird built its nest using face masks.
  • It is evident that our species are beginning to ingest and adopt solid waste. An act that undoubtedly represents a serious danger of extinction for them.
  • One of the countries with the highest rate of use of protective equipment is China, which uses about 450%.  Worldwide it represents 129 billion face masks and 65 billion gloves.
  • Multiple efforts are being made to collect the vast amount of solid waste originating from the pandemic around the world, in places such as beaches and rivers where the materials mainly flow.
  • A team of biologists are conducting studies to determine the effects caused by personal protective equipment on marine and wild species. And to know if the virus has any incidence on them.
  • Finally, the team of biologists called the attention of the community in general to place the waste in specific places that do not represent a threat to our biodiversity, given the latent threat of the coronavirus.
