Will Smith Movie Will not be Shown in Georgia in Protest

• (General Dispatch) –  The movie “Emancipation” starring Will Smith will not be produced in Georgia as a protest measure after the state’s voter integrity law was passed.

• The decision was made after Smith along with director Antoine Fuqua, said they could not allow the state to have revenue from playing the film, with the state being in favor of racism.

• “Right now, the Nation is coming to terms with its history and is trying to eliminate the vestiges of institutional racism in order to achieve true racial justice. We cannot in good conscience provide financial support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws designed to restrict voter access,” Smith and Antoine said.

• The film tells the story of a slave (Smith) who is a fugitive from white Southern slaveholders and attempts to join the union army, but in light of these decisions, Deadline assumed the film will be produced in Louisiana.

• Although the filming move may generate negative effects, Georgia is one of the states that generate more incentives for $870 million in tax credits for film and television shoots, even so it was not a limitation to adopt such a decision.

• On the other hand, some workers will be affected by the move, the state of Georgia has not pronounced itself on the matter in the face of innumerable criticisms that have been made by different actors about the voter’s law.

• The law has been pointed out as racist, and they affirmed that this type of measure will cause small minorities to abstain from voting after the identification is implemented.
