Astrazeneca Vaccine Suspended in Minors in United Kingdom

  • By John Deloria
  • (General Dispatch) – The University of Oxford has conducted several studies on the AstraZeneca vaccine, and limited its use in minors out of concern for side effects.
  • Although cases of blood clotting in adults have been reported, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) called for the study of 200 children between the ages of 6 and 17 to be suspended.
  • Andrew Pollard, a professor at the University of Oxford, told the BBC that the trials on minors did not show any problems, but he still prefers to wait for the approval of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
  • “While there are no safety concerns in the pediatric clinical trial, we await further information from the MHRA on its review of rare cases of thrombosis/thrombocytopenia that have been reported in adults, before administering further vaccines in the trial,” Pollard said.
  • The EMA’s head of vaccines, Marco Cavaleri, was one of the people who requested the suspension after finding that blood clotting in some people is linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine, so they are conducting investigations to find the source of the reaction.
  • Although the MHRA reported that so far there are 7 deaths and 30 cases of blood clotting, they will continue the investigations to further reduce the subsequent risks after the vaccine is administered.
  • Even so, the agency is calling for a continued immunization campaign with the AstraZeneca vaccine in adults, as the risks of side effects remain minimal compared to the harm that covid-19 can cause.
  • Minister Boris Johnson advised that immunization with the AstraZeneca vaccine should continue and asked the British community to be guided by the communications issued by the MHRA, despite the fact that it has been suspended in several European countries.
