Bar Owners in Hong Kong Prepare Demonstrations Against Covid-19 Restrictions

  • By Anton Grillo
  • (General Dispatch) – In protest against the restrictions imposed on bars in the city of Hong Kong, owners of the main restaurants held a mock hunger strike, urging the government to allow them to reopen their business activities.
  • The president of the Association of Licensed Bars and Clubs of Hong Kong led the protest, assuring that while the restaurants are crowded by the demand of customers, they keep their doors closed.
  • Exactly 230 days have remained closed the commercial activities in bars, generating considerable economic losses in the nation. Only 101 days have they been able to open their doors, but following very strict biosecurity protocols.
  • Consequently, the high seasons, characterized by a high number of tourists entering the country, have been limited by regulatory policies. This antagonistically does not affect restaurants.
  • Everything seems to indicate that those who violate the restrictive measures are punished with six months’ imprisonment and fines of more than 50,000 dollars, which is why many of them refrain from reopening their business premises.
  • For this reason, the Hong Kong government has issued executive actions that progressively allow the opening of commercial activities belonging to the gastronomic context, following the indications of the health area.
  • At the same time, the wave of contagions continues to be present in the nation, for this reason the policies restricting various activities are still in place.
  • Undoubtedly, Hong Kong’s economy is severely affected, since companies are operating at 60% of their production capacity and cannot exceed the established limits or risk being sanctioned.
