- (General Dispatch) – The government has turned to the British community to consult on whether nursing home workers should be given the vaccine on a compulsory basis.
- Matt Hancock The health secretary said the consultation will be in place for just over a month, in order to implement a measure that is democratically consulted so there is no downside down the line.
- Hancock said, “Older people living in nursing homes are most at risk of serious consequences from Covid-19 and we have seen the serious effects the virus has had on this group.”
- Although the UK has had an excellent campaign to vaccinate its citizens, the government is trying to protect the most vulnerable population, namely older adults.
- For this reason, this initiative is necessary, since applying the vaccine to the personnel in charge of caring for the elderly helps to reduce the coronavirus from affecting and spreading.
- The elderly have the right to return to the times before the pandemic and if they can be given the security to maintain their lives, the government has the right to be able to apply the necessary measures.
- The Minister of Vaccines, Nadhim Zahawi, clarified that if the consultation is carried out, it is to help the most fragile people, and that there should be no confusion that if it is approved, it should be associated in some way with employment.
- The measure may be debated since Minister Boris Johnson had stated that vaccines would not be compulsory, assuming that it would be “discriminatory”, and for this reason it is expected that the British themselves will give their opinion on this initiative.
