European Commission Requests Additional Vaccine Doses

  • By Wayne Rodrigo
  • (General Dispatch) – The Berlin AP media has reported that the 27-member European commission has ordered an additional 100 million vaccines.
  • After having problems in carrying out the immunization campaign, according to Berlin AP, the commission will receive the vaccines through the pharmaceutical company BioNTech in partnership with Pfizer of the US.
  • The countries were reportedly in discussion to approve this measure to increase the number of doses the European bloc would receive by 2021 to 600 million vaccines.
  • Although the measure has been harshly criticized, after the European countries have not been able to immunize themselves in comparison to the United Kingdom, which has had favorable results, managing to cover most of the vulnerable population.
  • On the other hand, Ursula Von Der Leyen has previously tried other types of measures, such as blocking the shipment of doses, as a possible solution to the problem.
  • One of the factors that has limited European countries has been the contractual problem they had with the pharmaceutical company astrazeneca, for having signed the deal months later, delaying production.
  • It is predicted that with the decision adopted, two thirds of the European population will be covered, said Sean Marett, commercial director of BioNTech, but to achieve 100% immunization, two doses will be required.
