Progress in Cancer Research to be Delayed Two Years Due to Pandemic

  • By Ely Márquez
  • (General Dispatch) – The Institute of Cancer Research in London warned that research may be limited by the lack of attention in this area following the announcement of the pandemic.
  • The institute predicted that the study may be delayed by two years, extending the time span, after a member of the ICR University of London, had reported that it was 18 months.
  • “The coronavirus pandemic has posed the greatest threat to cancer research in generations. I now fear that when our researchers predicted in the fall that breakthroughs for cancer patients could be delayed by almost 18 months, it was an underestimate,” the report said.
  • As the UK government has allocated large amounts of funding to address the coronavirus problem, it has sidelined several health sector investigations, delaying care for those who could potentially suffer from the disease.
  • Research has shown that around 4.7 million Britons are on a long waiting list for care, and a 30% reduction in the number of scientists in the field has affected the speed of the sector.
  • When the new outbreak of covid-19 was announced, the tight restrictions they implemented, limited the working hours in laboratories, currently trying to operate in the hours of midnight and 8 in the morning.
  • The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has predicted that cancer cases are a “time bomb”, as diagnoses have been reduced due to the poor attention given to patients.
  • On the other hand the number of patients started to decrease around 350000, at the beginning of the first quarter of 2020, a decrease that was affected at the beginning of the year 2021 with a reduction from 44% to 41%.
