Tension Between Russia and US Increases, Biden to Apply more Sanctions on Kremlin

  • (General Dispatch) – Tension between the U.S. and Russia continues to rise over the Kremlin’s military actions in the Crimean peninsula.
  • The deployment of soldiers and weapons of war has been increasing since President Vladimir Putin ordered to confront rebel groups, on the Ukrainian border, where separatists declared war against Kiev.
  • President Biden held a second phone call, where they had a long talk with President Vladimir Putin, after there were finger pointing from both sides, Biden said that Russia had interfered in the 2020 election polls.
  • Although there have been attempts to hold a personal meeting in the short term, Putin said that for now there is no planning, and he is not interested in discussing political issues with President Biden.
  • Previously the US had implemented lax sanctions on Russia, Biden threatened to apply some stricter ones, and however he said he would only add to the list 6 technology companies so as not to raise tensions further.
  • “If Russia continues to interfere with our democracy, I am prepared to take further action to respond. It is my responsibility as president of the United States to do so,” Biden said.
  • Biden canceled his planned dispatch of two warships to the Black Sea to assess the situation, but reversed his decision after his second call with Putin.
  • Ukraine’s tensions with Russia have risen since Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was planning some way to regain the Crimean peninsula which was occupied by the Russian army and annexed in 2014.
