130 Migrants die in Shipwreck off Libya Bound for Europe

  • By Anton Grillo
  • (General Dispatch) – Cairo AP media has reported that apparently 100 migrants died in a shipwreck off Libya that was bound for the European Union.
  • In the warmer months the increase in migrant crossings via boats has increased, however they have been more dangerous as the coast guard of both Libya and Europe do nothing about it.
  • Different humanitarian organizations have indicated that they understand the problems faced by European countries on the immigration issue, however they have pointed out that their efforts to save lives have been null.
  • The Associated Press reported that a Libyan coast guard official reportedly said that attempts were made to find the boat but their efforts were unsuccessful as their resources are limited for such searches.
  • The European humanitarian organization (SOS Méditerranée) said it attempted to conduct the search through its ship “Ocean Viking” after receiving a communication about a migrant boat capsizing northeast of Libya.
  • Despite their search, they said they failed to see more than 100 bodies around the capsized vessel, only managing to visualize 10.
  • “Our thoughts are with the lives that have been lost and the families who may never be certain what happened to their loved ones,” the organization said in a statement.
  • The organization has conducted a study so far this year, reported that approximately 350 bodies is the number of people who have drowned, now well has generated a debate to know what responsibility would have Europe or Libya.
