Ursula Von Der Leyen to Pursue Legal Action Against AstraZeneca

  • By Anton Grillo
  • (General Dispatch) – The Brussels AP media reported that they will take legal action against the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca for not complying with the clauses of the contract.
  • The European bloc’s main objective was to carry out its vaccination campaign through the large number of doses it had agreed with the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, but the plans ran into complications.
  • European Commission representative Stefan De Keersmaecker reported that the company has delayed the shipment of vaccines, but has not come up with any plans to increase production.
  • The company’s negotiations with the bloc took place in August last year, it was supposed to produce 300 million doses with an option of 100 million over the target.
  • The pharmaceutical company has presented complications for the delivery of the doses; in the first quarter of this year it was supposed to deliver 80 million vaccines and in the second quarter 180 million, but it has not been able to cover even 50% of the orders.
  • Astrazeneca said it takes responsibility despite countless efforts to try to fulfill the contract, but is determined to defend its position in court.
  • “We are moving forward to address the technical challenges and our production is improving, but the production cycle of a vaccine is very long, which means that these improvements take time to result in an increase in finished vaccine doses,” astrazeneca said.
  • The commission led by Ursula Von Der Leyen said it prefers to settle the dispute through legal channels, and thus avoid raising the tensions that remain so far, the only thing they will demand is the delivery of the doses as agreed.
