EU Blames Britain for Blocking Vaccine Exports Without Evidence

• (General Dispatch) – Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, warned of taking decisions regarding the shipment of vaccines outside the European bloc, due to the fact that most of its member countries have not yet been able to immunize their population.

• Even Great Britain was blamed without any evidence for issuing a measure that prevented the export of doses to the European Union. Currently the EU has presented complications for vaccination.

• Von der Leyen said that if it was necessary to take emergency measures, he will do so, even if it is necessary to intervene the pharmaceutical companies, after the contractual problem with AstraZeneca.

• Von der Leyen’s main complaint is that the pharmaceutical companies are exporting to other countries, but the media reported that this problem has been caused by the poor planning of the European countries in making the contracts months later.

• Great Britain has been one of the countries that have been successful in immunizing its inhabitants, managing to inject a large percentage of the population. In the face of such results, von der Leyen said he would block any shipment of vaccines to countries ahead of the European Union.

• The words came into effect when Italy blocked 250,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine destined for Australia, Von der Leyen gave approval for the Italian government to seize the batch of vaccine and distribute it to various European countries.

• According to The Times, he said that the commission is evaluating the reapplication of Article 122 of the EU, which will allow the commission to have the power to seize private and intellectual property.
