Amazon Will Not Sell Digital Books to Libraries

  • By Anton Grillo
  • (General Dispatch) – The commercial titan Amazon refuses to sell its digital books to libraries in the United States.
  • Amazon’s refusal to sell books belonging to its publishing house, to force readers to buy them, and to abandon libraries that for centuries have been a special place for thousands of people, is seen as a purely commercial interest.
  • According to Mikyla Bruder, head of global marketing for Amazon Publishing, told The Washington Post, “It is not clear to us that current digital library lending models fairly balance the interests of authors and library users.”
  • At the same time, some argue that today’s technological advances provide the ideal scenario for rigorous processes to be simplified. And this decision would be one of them.
  • In reference to other information, Amazon would be in negotiation with a non-profit organization, a fully public digital library.
  • For its part, the American Library Association in 2019 made known its constant concern about the way in which the right of readers is curtailed with decisions of this type.
  • A large number of readers live the consequences caused by the company, by not having the information contained in the digital library, which are often demanded by university professors.
  • In summary, Amazon maintains constant communication with OverDrive in its “willingness to innovate in an effort to support its business strategy.”
