Merkel’s Possible Successor Calls for Stricter Lockdown for Germans

  • By Anton Grillo
  • (General Dispatch) –  Armin Laschet, who is the president of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and possible successor to Chancellor Angela Merkel, is calling for even tighter restrictions against the coronavirus.
  • The European bloc is going through a complicated planning about covid-19, after vaccination campaigns have failed to achieve the targets, coupled with a new spike in cases of the virus.
  • Germany has lagged behind many countries in the number of people it has immunized, achieving a small number, so Laschet has called for extreme blocking measures while the situation stabilizes.
  • Laschet reported through Deutsche Welle and said “We need a bridge closure. We have to build a bridge to the point where many people are vaccinated… We are very close to the finish line… For the last meters we need an extra effort and that is what I am asking for today.”
  • The European Commission to solve this problem has tried to implement a measure to prevent the export of vaccines unless they give approval for it to be moved to the destination.
  • Even so, the third wave of the coronavirus has already begun to affect different nations, for example in France, hospitals have not been able to cope with the number of admissions due to Covid-19, increasing the mortality rate, a consequence of Macron’s measures.
  • According to Reuters media reported that Laschet among his proposal, details that a curfew should be applied where Germans avoid any activity that affects social distancing.
  • However, such proposals have been criticized by parties that are against Merkel, as they see these announcements as vague, claiming that they are measures to win votes in the next commission for the election of the Chancellor.
