- (General Dispatch) – The Brussels AP media reported that the European commission led by Ursula Von Der Leyen will plan a meeting to discuss the low levels of immunization that the 27-country bloc has been carrying out.
- The European Union is currently witnessing a new wave of coronavirus cases, and one of the most serious aspects is the shortage of vaccines, as they have had conflicts with production.
- The panorama has been complex for the commission; there are internal conflicts, not to mention the political problem with the United Kingdom, since they began to apply certain blockades on shipments of doses.
- For now the hospitals are at their limit to be able to attend more cases of COVID 19, on the other hand the meeting has been delayed since the cases of the virus have been alarming and even more with the new strain that is more infectious.
- Less than 10% of the European population has been vaccinated and Chancellor Angela Merkel said the need to increase production at pharmaceutical companies is a necessary effort.
- “We can clearly see that British facilities are producing for Britain. The United States is not exporting and, therefore, we are dependent on what can be produced in Europe,” Merkel said.
- One of the measures is to force the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to comply with the production that had been established in the contract, apart from the commission intends to block exports of doses to those countries that do not belong to the EU.
- The major conflict is that Great Britain is at the forefront of the vaccination campaign, something that the European Union has not been able to achieve, and for this reason it is expected that these communist-style decisions will be taken.
