Migrant Numbers Across the English Channel on the Rise

  • By Ely Marquez
  • (General Dispatch) – The English Channel is the smallest sea of the continental shelf of Europe, being one of the most transited routes for immigrants, since the moment the United Kingdom separated from the European Union; more than 500 undocumented immigrants have been captured.
  • The cases in February of immigrants captured and taken to British lands have increased and 308 foreigners without any kind of documentation have been registered, one of the reasons is the change in temperatures making it less complicated to navigate.
  • Last year an entry of 8500 immigrants was registered and it is assumed that it was much higher, since minors were not counted; the British government is concerned about this situation and fears that the numbers will triple.
  • According to a BBC reporter Simon Jones said that there is no information issued by the Home Office about the situation of the immigrants on British soil and whether they have been deported to their countries of origin.
  • The problem with this type of undocumented entry is that most of them have criminal records from the city of origin.
  • Undoubtedly, the British government should reinforce naval patrols to better track illegal boats and reach an agreement with the EU to speed up deportations and seek solutions regarding asylum.
  • A statement from the Ministry of the Interior said: “People should apply for asylum in the first safe country they reach and not risk their lives by making these dangerous crossings. We continue to pursue the criminals behind these illegal crossings.”
