European Union Desperate for Vaccine

  • By Step. G. Halston
  • (General Dispatch) – Finance Minister Simon Birmingham is surprised with the EU in its desperate attempt to obtain vaccines, after Italy blocked the access of 250,000 doses to the country by order of the EU.
  • Ursula von der Leyen had given the authorization for Italy to carry out such a blockade, according to media reports that this decision was taken because of the shortage of vaccines in the EU.
  • Currently Britain has been leading in immunizations when the EU still has about 8% of people vaccinated, the seized vaccines will be distributed in the different states of Europe.
  • The Australian government said that this type of action will not affect them, as they have already requested and are awaiting the arrival of vaccines produced by other pharmaceutical companies. Minister Birmingham criticized the European Union: “The world is in uncharted territory at the moment; it is not surprising that some countries break the rule book.”
  • Scott Morrison, Prime Minister of Australia, sent a statement, referring to the mismanagement of the EU under Ursula von der Leyen, where they have fallen behind in the distribution of vaccines across Europe, while Britain has already had a quarter of its population immunized.
  • Morrison understood the situation and said, “In Italy, people are dying at the rate of 300 a day. So I can certainly understand the high level of anxiety that would exist in Italy and in many countries in Europe.”
  • The EU blamed the drug maker for having preferences in the timing of the contract, leaving the negotiation to drag on. The pharma claimed that Britain had made the contract three months earlier, unlike Europe.
  • To finished, Matthew Lesh said that “Australia is not responsible for the European Union’s failure to secure sufficient doses or to vaccinate its entire population; Australia’s most vulnerable should not have to bear the consequences.”
