6,500 Migrants Have Died in Qatar During Construction Work for the 2022 World Cup

  • By Ely Márquez
  • (General Dispatch) – According to a report, some 6500 migrants have died in the construction of the stadiums in Qatar that will host the FIFA World Cup in 2022.
  • The Guardian newspaper has been in charge of executing the brilliant report, which alleges that one of the main causes of worker fatalities is the lack of appropriate safety elements for workers.
  • “Data from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka revealed there were 5,927 deaths of migrant workers in the period 2011–2020. Separately, data from Pakistan’s embassy in Qatar reported a further 824 deaths of Pakistani workers, between 2010 and 2020.” According to the british newspaper
  • Although there has not been sufficient transparency regarding the specific causes of death, reports claim that the most common cases are asphyxiation or natural death, which according to local authorities are heart failure.
  • One of the reasons that has caused the greatest suspicion about the handling of the deaths and the transparency of the Qatari authorities is the fact that almost all of those who have died during these efforts have not been autopsied.
  • The heat waves suffered during the summer in the country have also been a determining factor in the death of these workers who are subjected to high levels of stress, causing the emotional mix to become a time bomb for the body.
  • The Qatari government assures that it will continue to guarantee the necessary supplies for all workers on the construction site in order to significantly reduce the number of fatalities until the completion date.
  • FIFA has not pronounced itself on the situation nor has it set a position on the matter, so it seems that the only important goal is the commercial performance of the championship and not the lives that make it possible.
