Italy Blocks Vaccine Shipment to Australia

  • By William Silgueiro
  • (General Dispatch) – The European Union has allowed the Italian government to block a shipment of vaccines to Australian territory through a new export control system.
  • The EU warned pharmaceuticals that if any of the clauses were breached they would have the authority to allow or deny the movement of vaccines into European territory.
  • Information sources said that Italy had requested EU approval to carry out the blockade, after the Swedish-British pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca had shipped 250,000 doses.
  • Currently the pharmaceutical industry has had problems with the EU for not meeting the agreed production for the month of January. The pharmaceutical company stated that they have had problems with the plants in Europe and as a result the production was lower than expected.
  • According to media reports, the pharmaceutical company has tried to favor Great Britain over Europe, but Pascal Soriot, CEO stated that this is false, as it seems that London had signed a contract three months before Brussels.
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the contract was to be done on time, but blamed the bureaucracy for interfering and overreaching, delaying the signing of the deal.
  • Then a plant in Belgium was raided, because it was suspected of having shipped a batch of vaccines to Britain. While most Britons are being immunized, the European population is still waiting for the vaccine.
  • Farage said “If this crisis has taught us anything, it is that the best decisions are made by national governments acting in their national interest.”
  • The doses that were seized will be distributed throughout the European Union, so the Australian country will have to wait for a new batch of vaccine.
