COVID-19 Continues to Stifle the Texas Economy

  • By Ely Márquez
  • (General Dispatch) – For decades, U.S. and Mexican citizens have maintained a commercial exchange at the Texas border. Both economies have been sustained through legal border transit.
  • It is worth noting that approximately one year ago, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued an ordinance prohibiting the use of legal border crossings. (CBP) issued an ordinance prohibiting the transit of people at the borders due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The measure directly impacts tourists entering the country by land mainly from Canada and Mexico. Since, they do not require other special procedures, because their stay in the North American territory is less than 72 hours.
  • As a consequence, commercial establishments have had to close their doors in the towns adjacent to the port because they are lonely due to the absence of people.
  • For this reason, the owners of different commercial businesses have testified that the measure adopted has affected them greatly, and they request the authorities to consider the decision and under the biosecurity measures to reopen the passage.
  • At the same time, a group of mayors, the Economic Development Committee, and some county judges have tried to lift the measure, but this has been impossible.
  • The effect caused by these restrictions is based on the fact that every day many people stop acquiring goods and services and merchants stop generating the necessary resources.
  • It is expected that on the next date of expiration of the measure, March 21, the border will be reopened so that both demanders and suppliers can carry out their economic activities normally.
