Prison and Fines for People Damaging Monuments in Great Britain

  • By Ely Márquez
  • (General Dispatch) –  The Minister Boris Johnson will promote a strong legislation for those who vandalize or desecrate monuments or statues in Great Britain.
  • Boris has applied a package of measures involving all those institutions of legislation and security, where they will apply the proposed new law; previously the sentence was 3 months imprisonment for those who damage monuments worth £ 5,000.
  • Now the new law imposes a fine of £2,500 and 10 years imprisonment. This decision came after large monuments with high historical value (The Cenotaph and Sir Winston Churchill) were attacked by a group of protesters.
  • James Sunderland Conservative and former British Army officer supports the creation of this law and said “We have seen too many incidents of vandalism where judges have not had the powers to respond adequately to public outrage.”
  • Some teachers say they understand in a way the outrage at how Britain came to have its riches, but history cannot be changed and it must be taught in the classroom in a very professional way so that children see it in a critical way without having to come to this kind of action.
  • On the other hand the “save our statues” campaign had been created who issued a twitter saying “It has taken 9 months, but this is very welcome as a punishment and deterrent to protect our heritage, maintain law and order.”
  • The government’s Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill will also apply other measures, limit protests and set a time limit on them, including not being able to emit any sonic pollution.
