- (General Dispatch) – The situation in Afghanistan today is not encouraging; it was known that the former administration under Donald Trump had reached an agreement to withdraw US troops as long as the Taliban complied with the cessation of attacks.
- Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Senator Bob Menendez is concerned that Taliban groups will continue to carry out attacks on U.S. troops or destroy key areas of the Afghan country.
- “If it is confirmed that the Taliban are not living up to their commitments, which I personally believe they are not, then we will have to reconsider the May 1 deadline,” Menendez said.
- The Biden administration has been criticized for being overly assessing the situation and not issuing some action on it, unlike the Trump administration which was determined to withdraw troops.
- Trump’s idea was to end the eternal war where past presidents have failed to resolve, apparently Senator Jack Reed in a video conference said “Withdrawing in several months now is a very challenging and destabilizing effort” calling for extending the time frame.
- Rep. Michael McCaul said the Biden administration should phase out troops gradually, leaving a small number of soldiers, so as not to allow the Taliban to take over Afghanistan.
- Pakistan’s director general of inter-service public relations, Maj. Gen. Babar Iftikhar, said Afghanistan has strengthened the political and security infrastructure, and they will not allow the Taliban to wreak havoc in their country again.
- Rep. Liz Cheney issued an opinion that the U.S. must be absolutely certain that the Taliban will never again carry out a terrorist attack against the nation.
