Biden and Blinkend Without a Clear Target in Asia

  • By Steph G. Halston
  • (General Dispatch) – The Chinese media Global Times accused Secretary of State Antony Blinken of taking a threatening stance after requesting sanctions for 24 Chinese officials without Biden’s support.
  • President Biden did not give great importance to the actions intended by Antony Blinken, even the Chinese media went so far as to mock as the Trump administration had already sanctioned the list sent by Blinken.
  • On the other hand, the Secretary of State began a tour of Asia in order to strengthen ties with allied countries. Diplomats from China and the US will meet in Alaska for talks on human rights violations in Tibet and Xinjiang and CCP threats to Taiwan.
  • “We are clear-eyed about Beijing’s continued failure to live up to its commitments, and we talked about how Beijing’s aggressive and authoritarian behavior is challenging the stability, security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region,” Blinken said ahead of the Alaska meeting.
  • China’s Foreign Ministry representative Zhao Lijian said it will not allow countries to interfere with China’s internal affairs, “and its determination and will to safeguard its fundamental interests is unwavering,” Lijian said.
  • According to Secretary of State Blinken, the sanctions are necessary after China imposed a law that overrides Hong Kong’s autonomous law, which allows that a person who wants to hold political office must be a CCP adherent.
  • The Global Times advised Blinken to drop a posture of force and be more rational if he is going to try to reach a dialogue, in order to have a better political outlook between the two nations.
