Extension of the Period of Presence of Guards at the Capitol

  • (General Dispatch) – A request has been made for the National Guard to extend its presence in Washington DC for two more months following the capitol incident. This information was confirmed by Representative Elissa Slotkin who reported in a tweet that she had heard about the request.
  • Slotkin a member of the US House of Representatives said “No one likes to see fortress-like security around the Capitol. And no one wants to ever again have a security problem in and around this symbolic place.”
  • Slotkin added that these types of decisions should be brought to the attention of members of Congress and explain the purpose behind the resolution.
  • The Pentagon said it knows nothing about any requests made by the police, but according to Capitol Police there may be a possible plot underway by a radical group and they have asked the National Guard to help.
  • These security measures were adopted after the incident at the capitol by radical pro-Trump groups on January 6.
  • There are about 7,000 National Guard troops guarding the area, and they hope to reduce this to a total of 5,000 by mid-March.
  • Republicans have complained about the cost of capitol security, which has been $500 million in U.S. taxpayer funds.
