China Attempts to Hack Finnish Parliament Security

  • By Wayne Rodrigo
  • (General Dispatch) – Finland’s security institution said in a statement to the Russian media HELSINKI that it was the victim of a cyber-attack by a group called “APT31” that tried to extract information from the parliament.
  • The intelligence service “SUPO” detected an irregularity in the security systems in late autumn 2020, after the APT31 group attempted to search for information in the emails of senior parliamentary executives.
  • According to the Finnish security agency issued the APT31 group information via twitter, yet it did not directly blame the Chinese government for being behind the attack.
  • APT31 is presumed to be working for the Chinese government but there is no proof yet, the security agency said it will be conducting investigations to determine which nation attempted to carry out the attack.
  • The National Bureau of Investigation NBI said that in early 2020 they have been victims of other cyber-attacks for that reason they have been trying to strengthen security by upgrading systems to make them less vulnerable.
  • The NBI said it will step up investigations after SUPO pointed out that the APT31 group has been the culprit of the various attacks in order to use the information to their advantage to destabilize the nation in politics.
  • According to FireEye one of the most important cybersecurity firms worldwide, they point out that the culprit is China, which has financed these criminal groups with the aim of destabilizing nations and expanding its power in all nations.
  • On the other hand, there was a similar case when another group of computer criminals found vulnerabilities in Microsoft’s system to try to keep valuable information, however this type of case points to China as the culprit, after a US security agency tracked the IP of the criminals.
