Chinese Foreign Minister Calls for a Role for China in the Nuclear Deal

  • By Joergen Haisem
  • (General Dispatch) –  Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi toured the Middle East and made his first visit to Iran demanding a nuclear maintenance report.
  • The Global Times reported that high-level official Wang Yi will act as an intermediary to de-escalate the levels of political tensions Iran has been facing over its nuclear program.
  • On a positive note, the Biden administration hopes to rejoin the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and Wang hopes that the nations will reach an agreement to avoid the geopolitical chaos that has ensued.
  • China will now be the protagonist to restore the JCPOA, Wang said “the United States should take concrete steps to ease unilateral sanctions against Iran and its “Long-arm jurisdiction” over third parties, while Iran should resume compliance with its nuclear commitments”.
  • This action by the Asian giant seeks to promote peace and prevent the creation of nuclear weapons or weapons of mass destruction, apart from the US removing the sanctions it has imposed against Iran.
  • According to analysts of the Global Times now the nation that should attend to these cases of intermediation is going to be China since the US has not achieved any progress with the Biden administration.
  • “The Middle East states are happy to see China playing a greater role in regional affairs, and China will also exchange views with these countries on these issues and contribute Chinese wisdom to peace in the Middle East,” China’s foreign ministry said.
  • On the other hand China hopes to do business with Iran in different sectors of the economy and thus further strengthen ties and diplomacy with Tehran.
