- (General Dispatch) – North Korean media stated that they will add new short-range ballistic missiles to their arsenal, in order to continue demonstrating strength to South Korea.
- President Moon Jae-in is concerned that Kim Jong Un’s arsenal continues to grow as it has been a hostile country and can put the international community at risk, for this reason he hopes to strengthen ties with the US, to provide greater security.
- Moon hopes to reach a meeting between the U.S. and North Korea to discuss sensitive issues, but this may be difficult to achieve, as the Biden administration has not been successful in communicating with the regime.
- On the other hand, Moon said that the North’s regime is constantly conducting missile drills in order to provoke the nation, yet the population has shown concern for its sovereignty.
- Professor John Delury of South Korea’s Yonsei University said “These tests come sometime after Biden’s inauguration, and are still at a low enough level to give the administration pause. Regardless of North Korea’s intentions, however, the effect is to elevate the importance and move it up the administration’s agenda.”
- There have been expectations of what action the Biden administration will take, as former President Donald Trump was able to meet with Dictator Kim Jong Un and although he made little progress with North Korea it made a difference compared to Biden.
- The Japanese government reported that the new missiles are different from those previously used by the Korean regime, and do not comply with the regulations imposed by the UN Security Council.
- Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi stated that the missile used in the military practice was the one unveiled at a parade earlier this year.
