- (General Dispatch) – According to a report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that it is granting stay permits to immigrants who have managed to cross the border.
- The former head of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Mark Morgan, said that in the month of March alone 45,000 immigrants have entered the border and have been detained but released into the United States.
- Todd Bensman, a senior national security fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, said that immigrants are being granted a special permit called “parole” allowing them to stay in the country for 1 year.
- Such a permit can be extended through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), immigrants who have managed to enter the country can apply for jobs, something that has been happening since they boarded a bus to different destinations in the US.
- In early March, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stated that detained immigrants are being released into the U.S. regardless of whether they test positive for COVID 19.
- The situation at the border has become even more complicated after the Biden administration eliminated the “Remain in Mexico” program, a process that people had to go through to apply for asylum from the Central American country.
- On the other hand, several Republicans have requested the reinstatement of Title 42, which would allow the deportation of immigrants in a short period of time without such lengthy processes.
- It is expected that Biden manages to change this measure, the policies implemented are overflowing the situation at the border, and the facilities are at maximum capacity while the White House Secretary Jen Psaki has reported that there is no crisis.
