Germans to Go to Elections this Weekend

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – Berlin AP media reported that on Sunday elections will be held between two states to see who will succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel, placing the Social Democratic Party in a tense situation.
  • There are also expectations about the Green Party, whose fundamental base has been political ecology, defender of civil rights and radical feminism, which is expected to play a leading role in the commissions to be held and then run for the German presidency.
  • Many Germans have complained about the slow process of the immunization campaign, and the time it has taken to lift certain controls of the pandemic, in addition to accusations to legislators of Merkel’s party who made business deals to acquire masks before the pandemic.
  • Such discontent will be reflected in the election polls, making it more complicated for the politician Winfried Kretschmann, founder of the Green party, who has been in office for a decade in Baden-Wuerttemberg, to be ousted.
  • These elections are important to raise the political weight and conclusions of the center-right party to define its candidate to see who will succeed Merkel in addition to the elections for the German parliament.
  • On the other hand, the situation of the Christian Democratic Union party has been negative, leaving a complicated panorama for Armin Laschet who assumed the presidency of the union. “The signs for the CDU and Armin Laschet are not good, very weak results for the party are to be expected” said Thorsten Faas.”
  • Baden-Wuerttemberg has been an important area for politics as it is home to around 7.7 million voters, it was dominated for a while by the CDU party until Kretschmann imposed his dominance with the green party.
  • It is assumed that the Green Party became very popular after the Fukushima reactor catastrophe in Japan, which made environmental policies included in Kretschmann’s agenda very relevant to citizens.
