Los Angeles Mayor Proposes “Universal Basic Income” Allowance

  • By Jennifer Prill
  • (General Dispatch) – Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti will unveil an initial “universal basic income” program for some state residents.
  • That program will be unveiled Tuesday when he unveils the new budget in detail.
  • In retrospect, a year ago the city had solvency problems, sending workers on furlough, caused by anticipated budget shortfalls.
  • Initially, the economic contribution was strengthened under the policies of then-President Donald Trump, coupled with President Joe Biden’s covid-19 aid bill.
  • Accordingly, Mayor Garcetti is proposing $1 billion earmarked for homelessness expenses, and a $24 million allocation of “universal basic income” grants.
  • It is important to note that a city such as Stockton, California, in the Central Valley, was one of the first to approve the subsidy, providing great benefits for its citizens.
  • However, the Republican Party refused the stimulus package proposal, on the grounds that it does not address the pandemic as such, but is directed to other social welfare expenditures.
  • In conclusion, this Tuesday, when the Mayor presents the budget, it will be known if the plan can be effectively developed in the coming months to generate benefits among the citizens of Los Angeles.
