Facebook to Block Hate ads Over George Floyd case

  • (General Dispatch) – Facebook has announced that it will limit those ads that incite hatred, or attempt to broadcast any misinformation, as the trial of ex-policeman Derek Chauvin accused of murder is expected in the short term.
  • The social network affirms that they will be transparent at the time the verdict is obtained, since the murder of George Floyd has raised racial tensions, generating hatred and violence in citizens.
  • “We want to strike the right balance between allowing people to talk about the trial and what the verdict means, while still doing our part to protect everyone’s safety.” the social network said.
  • The New York Times said that Facebook will monitor and delete all those publications that praise or support the death of George Floyd, as well as those messages that incite the carrying of weapons.
  • On the other hand, it will increase security for members of Floyd’s family, against possible acts of harassment or threats made against them, apart from destructive messages.
  • Monika Bickert, Facebook’s vice president of content policy, said that although it has been a difficult time about this situation, the social network provides a balance for people to achieve debate on the issue.
  • Although the social network has been harshly criticized lately, about possible censorship actions apart from influencing different economic, political and social spheres. Facebook affirmed that its platform allows the free expression of information.
