Underage Migrant Rescued in Rio Grande, who was Abandoned by Smugglers

  • (General Dispatch) – On the night of April 19 in Rio Grande, Border Patrol officers from the Laredo Sector reported the rescue of a minor migrant. The girl was abandoned by a human smuggling group.
  • A U.S. Army soldier, in support of Customs and Border Protection, spotted a group of people trying to cross the Rio Grande River, who fled into Mexico when they were discovered.
  • The minor was turned over to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services after being identified as a Salvadoran national and obtaining a medical analysis to verify her health status.
  • The risk to which border crossers are exposed is imminent, and this is the second time this year that soldiers belonging to the U.S. border mission are serving to safeguard lives.
  • Matthew J. Hudak, chief agent in charge of this operation stated that with the support of technology and the assistance of the U.S. Army soldier, they were able to extract the girl from the water to save her life.
  • The Department of Defense (DOD) has a long history of supporting efforts to secure the borders of the United States,” said Sector Laredo agents following the operation.
  • U.S. Northern Command and Army North will continue to deploy operations and work in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security and CBP to ensure high border security.
