United Kingdom Confirms Mandatory use of NHS APP for Overseas Travel

  • By Joergen Haisem
  • (General Dispatch) –   The National Health Service (NHS) has announced that people who want to travel abroad will have to make use of its application being the first vaccine passport.
  • A government minister said that from now on British citizens will have to present their health status regarding the virus to the authorities in order to leave the country.
  • Transport Minister Grant Shapps is evaluating how to add more uses to the new APP other than booking appointments, identifying user details and status if they have recently tested negative.
  • Minister Shapps told Sky News media outlet “I am working internationally with partners around the world to make sure the system can be recognized internationally.”
  • The UK is still in the process of loosening up on the tight restrictions the government had imposed, however although it has taken the first step to make use of the app it has not specified the destinations to which Britons can travel.
  • One of the countries that have offered to reach an agreement with the UK has been Greece, where its economy has been severely affected, as its main income is focused on the tourism sector.
  • Although Greece said that if necessary it would accept the paper certificate, but other nations such as Portugal, said it prefers it to be digital through a QR code and thus avoid some kind of forgery.
  • Shapps said the government will remain cautious to evaluate which nations will be put on the “green list” on the other hand Spain said it was willing to accept the UK’s digital certificate.
