Oxford University to Evaluate Music Studies Degree for Being Linked to White Supremacy

• (General Dispatch) –  Oxford University is evaluating a curriculum overhaul after announcing that music classes are associated with “colonialism” and favor white supremacy.

• Several professors of the music department have joined the Black Lives Matter group of protesters, an international and decentralized movement that seeks to protect the black community from any act of physical or verbal violence.

• The professors have demonstrated and have asked the university administrators to eliminate some musical notations from the curriculum and thus provide other types of instruction that are not exclusively of European heritage.

• In the teachers’ statement they claim that the musical notations are influenced by colonialism, being supported by white supremacy, affecting the learning of the community of color.

• Students feel overwhelmed when they are taught Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert, among others, because this type of music was created in the slave period.

• Although this type of statement is under debate, since there are some musical notes that were created long before the slave trade and were used in medieval times.

• However, in order to diversify the musical teaching, teachers have advised to implement music such as Hip-Hop and jazz, which come from the African culture.

• On the other hand this kind of initiative has received some criticism for example the leader of the Heritage Party, David Kurten said “For God’s sake. Oxford is supposed to be one of our leading universities promoting academic rigor and excellence. It shouldn’t be peddling nonsense like ‘classical music is racist and’ the scores are not inclusive.”
