Retail Sales Plummet Following Winter Storm

- (General Dispatch) – The United States recorded a considerable decrease in retail sales in February, due to the excessively cold weather experienced by the nation.
- The U.S. Department of Commerce indicated that retail sales were down 3% compared to January. Economists were forecasting a 0.5% decline.
- It is worth noting that January was a much more productive month, the upward trend in retail sales was 7.6%.
- The climate change caused the drop in the curve, which month after month registered considerable increases, as a large part of the population was effectively sheltered in their homes.
- It is important to mention that the federal government granted $600 for some U.S. citizens’ homes while the climatic event took place.
- Consequently, one of the least affected sectors were service stations and concessionaires, with 8.9% in consideration of an important increase during the month of January.
- In contrast, catering centers, bars, and clothing stores have fallen considerably in their retail sales since 2020.
- A considerable contraction for the U.S. economy was caused by the climate changes, which, together with the pandemic, are damaging the country’s economic development.
