Education for Immigrants a Priority for Biden

  • By James Kravitz
  • (General Dispatch) –  Immigrant teenagers will now be able to be educated in San Diego, California by orders of the Biden administration through face-to-face classes, even if they have just arrived at the border.
  • The San Diego Convention Center will have 13 teachers who will teach in-person, biosecurity-compliant classes to more than 700 immigrant teens.
  • The teenagers will be able to receive classes in English, visual arts, and performing arts, something that has been criticized by some Republicans since U.S. minors have not yet been able to attend classrooms due to the coronavirus blockades.
  • Roberto Carrillo, an official with the San Diego County Office of Education, said this type of instruction is positive and necessary to help with English language communication.
  • On the other hand, the San Diego Unified School District is being evaluated to open the doors for teenagers in general, but it will be in a mixed way with a schedule where face-to-face and remote classes are taught.
  • However, this type of measure has caused discomfort to U.S. representatives, since preference is being given to immigrant teenagers while those from the country are being excluded.
  • “For more than a year, parents and students in San Diego County have been waiting for educators to answer one question: when will our schools reopen with face-to-face instruction only? And for a year, they have been told to wait,” said Rep. Darrell Issa.
  • Senator Tom Cotton said Biden’s policies should be focused first and foremost on the U.S., and applies strict measures to decrease the levels of immigrants entering the country.
