- (General Dispatch) – This week Pfizer and BioNTech said that their vaccine has a 100% efficacy in adolescents between 12 and 15 years of age, after having carried out several investigations.
- The pharmaceutical companies conducted a clinical study involving more than 2,000 adolescents, some of whom had already suffered from the disease and others who were completely healthy, and the results are expected to be revealed in the next few days.
- The clinical study revealed that the antibodies had a greater response against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, being 100% effective, unlike previous studies that were conducted in patients between 16 and 25 years of age.
- However, it was revealed that the side effects have been tolerable, on the other hand, when Pfizer and BioNTech release the results, it is expected that the US FDA and other European organizations will allow approval.
- To begin immunizing the population between the ages of 12 and 15, however the company guarantees that the adolescents who underwent the study will have their health status monitored for more than 2 years.
- “We share the urgency to expand licensure of our vaccine for use in younger populations and are encouraged by the clinical trial data from adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15,” said Albert Bourla, president and CEO of Pfizer.
- Bourla said that although different companies seek to prioritize immunizing the most vulnerable populations such as the elderly, excellent results were obtained in adolescents.
- BioNTech co-founder Ugur Sahin said, “All over the world, we long for a normal life. This is especially true for our children. The initial results we have seen in the adolescent studies suggest that children are particularly well protected by vaccination, which is very encouraging given the trends we have seen in recent weeks regarding the spread of the UK B.1.1.7 variant. It is very important to allow them to return to daily school life and meet friends and family while protecting them and their loved ones.”
