Seattle Students to Watch Classes Next to Homeless Encampments

  • By Ely Márquez
  • (General Dispatch) –  Representatives have expressed discomfort after learning that their children will begin classes in April next to encampments set up by homeless people.
  • The tents have been set up at Broadview Thomson K-8, located at 13052 Greenwood Ave. and Edmond S. Meany Middle School, located at 201 21st Ave., and it is assumed that they will remain even though the children will be starting school.
  • The community has called for this problem to be resolved in the district, as they have pointed it out as dangerous for the safety of their children, besides the fact that they occupy a site that is necessary for the students’ learning.
  • The media outlet KOMO said this week “Neighbors have been asking Seattle Public Schools for months to remove the encampment, which they say has brought increasing problems to their neighborhood.”
  • In response to the representatives’ complaint the authorities informed that they cannot do anything until the institution sends a communiqué demanding help to the city of Seattle.
  • On the other hand, in the camps, tent owners have been allowed to consume psychotropic substances, including in February a woman died from an overdose.
  • Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said she is ready to restore order at the school, but is waiting for the board of education to come forward before acting.
  • “Seattle School Board members demanded that the mayor’s office not sweep dangerous and growing homeless encampments on two school properties” said a reporter Seattle Jason Rantz.
