Coast Guard Divers Hoping to Find 12 Missing Persons Alive

  • By James Kravitz
  • (General Dispatch) – A team of divers are preparing to conduct a search for oil industry workers after the wreck of the vessel, where they hope to find 12 remaining people alive.
  • The hope of the rescue team is that the people have found air pockets to stay alive inside the Seacor Power, submerged in 50-foot seas about 8 miles off the coast of Louisiana.
  • Based on weather conditions, the rescue team plans to reach down to the depths to access the vessel and achieve their goal.
  • Authorities indicated that two of the missing persons were in communication with the rescue team via VHF radio after the boat capsized due to the strong force of hurricane force winds.
  • It should be noted that time is of the essence, because if they are found alive, the oxygen in the air bags will soon run out, said Mauritius Bell, dive safety officer at the California Academy of Sciences.
  • One of the rescue attempts yesterday was unsuccessful, but the Coast Guard is unable to determine whether people are still at the scene.
  • So far only six people were rescued moments after the ship sank on Tuesday. Following the rescue communications the ship managed to sustain at first.
  • Hopes of finding the twelve people alive are dwindling due to the time that has elapsed since the shipwreck, and new rescue maneuvers will be attempted this Friday.
