Federal Judge Issues Ordinance to Stop Minnesota Law Enforcement Officers from Assaulting the Press

  • By Joergen Haisem
  • (General Dispatch) – By means of an ordinance, a federal judge has succeeded in preventing Minnesota law enforcement officers from carrying out any act of physical or verbal violence against journalists and other members of the press in Daunte Wright.
  • The injunction was issued in response to allegations made by journalists that police officers fired rubber bullets and tear gas at them.
  • Evidently, these acts of violence against the press and their work equipment prevent the press from carrying out their work of observing events and reporting.
  • At the same time, the judge justified his order by citing federal court jurisprudence, which prohibits any public official from carrying out acts of violence against any civilian.
  • According to the information gathered, the journalists covering the protest were subjected by the police to remain on the ground, then were deprived of their liberty and later released on Saturday night.
  • In this sense, freedom of expression is evidently being curtailed by the security agencies, violating the rights enshrined in the constitution.
  • Consequently, physical aggression against members of the press could also be observed in the development of the events.
  • It is hoped that through the ordinance issued by the judge, Minnesota law enforcement agencies will reconsider their position and allow journalists to carry out their work.
