District of Columbia Activates National Guard In Anticipation of Derek Chauvin Verdict

  • By William Silgueiro
  • (General Dispatch) – As a measure to support local police in the District of Columbia, the National Guard is activating 250 officers in anticipation of possible First Amendment demonstrations.
  • In the first instance, the request was made by the DC Metropolitan Police Department, which has had to respond to the constant protests, due to police incidents.
  • Among the actions to be taken to strengthen security in the capital, the Guard will have to contribute with the blocking of streets and surveillance around pedestrian areas.
  • The main reason for the police to shield itself from the support of other security agencies is linked to the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chavin.
  • For their part, members of the National Guard said they are committed to the safety of citizens and the peace of the city.
  • Meanwhile, Democratic activists and senators have encouraged the public to protest if Chauvin is not convicted of the murder of George Floyd.
  • Similarly, some House Democrats have falsely accused former President Donald Trump of carrying out acts of violence on Capitol Hill.
  • Notably, law enforcement agencies are awaiting the judge’s sentencing, which will be released very soon, and on alert for any attempted violence on the city’s streets.
