UK Sues Social Network Tik Tok for Using Children’s Information

  • (General Dispatch) – Anne Longfield, the former children’s commissioner for England, has sued the social network Tik Tok, after learning that it has used the data of underage users for other purposes.
  • The BBC media reported that the Chinese social platform will have to pay a millionaire sum if the case is won by Longfield, since the videos of minors can be shared without any problem.
  • However, with the company’s payment, that money will be distributed to all the children involved, being these millions of users, on the other hand, the company said it expects to defend its position in court.
  • According to the company’s lawyers claim that the platform only requests basic data such as phone number, videos, address, requesting sufficient security for the protection of children.
  • “Privacy and security are TikTok’s top priorities and we have robust policies, processes and technologies in place to help protect all users and, in particular, our teen users. We believe the claims are without merit and we intend to vigorously defend the action” the company said in a statement.
  • However, Longfield told the BBC that he focused directly on TikTok, leaving aside the other social networks, as this platform requires too much user data and is dangerous if it does not have the necessary security.
  • Although the platform has generated high popularity in the pandemic, allowing people and children to share their interests and have fun through different activities, Longfield said there is a sinister undercurrent.
