British Government to Evict Migrants with Failed Asylum Applications

  • By Ely Márquez
  • (General Dispatch) –  The British government has once again resumed deportations for those immigrants who have applied for asylum, but were not approved, so they began to carry out evictions in funded housing.
  • The Guardian media released a letter issued by the director of the Home Office, where the immigration minister, Chris Philp, told other officials to start following up on the immigrants immediately.
  • “We will share details of the current caseload for review with local authorities to assist them with planning,” the letter said.
  • However, they warned that if the migrant decides to voluntarily leave the home a flight could be scheduled for deportation via airplane, on the other hand they added that the eviction will not be by force they will have 21 days to leave the site.
  • It is expected that for now the eviction will target those migrants with unsuccessful asylum applications, such measure had been suspended due to the restrictions imposed by the government because of the pandemic.
  • However, it is important to take into account the costs of keeping the migrants, with accommodation, food, health care, but it should be clear that all the funding comes from taxpayers.
  • The president of Migration Watch UK, Alp Mehmet, criticized the plans that are to be implemented, pointing out that they are lax measures, and that a rigorous follow-up should be carried out to verify that the immigrants do return to their country of origin and are not left wandering in the country.
  • Studies have revealed that the government has received around 60,000 asylum applications, the vast majority of which have been rejected, however they are kept in government housing.
