Joe Biden Asks Congress to Approve The Equality Law

  • By James Kratviz
  • (General Dispatch) – The LBGTQ+ community continues to search for their space in society and demand full equality of their rights due to the high rates of discrimination they have experienced from various social sectors.
  • Biden weighed in on the issue saying: “The Equality Act provides long overdue federal civil rights protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, locking in critical safeguards in our housing, education, public services, and lending systems — and codifying the courage and resilience of the LGBTQ+ movement into enduring law”
  • The U.S. bishops oppose the law, calling on Congress not to pass it because it infringes on privacy, women’s safety and religious freedom.
  • The health care sector does not seem to be in full agreement with the news either, as this law would force health care providers and professionals to perform unethical procedures in disregard of their religious convictions.
  • It is claimed that the approval of this law would affect the civil rights of women and girls since it allows the biological man access to private spaces.
  • Other sensitive points on which those against this law seem to rely on is the threat of inequality that may be generated in women’s sports because transgender men may have physical advantages and other benefits leaving women displaced.
  • “The Act’s erroneous definitions of ‘sex’ and ‘gender identity’ would erase women’s hard-won and distinctive recognition in federal law,” the bishops asserted.
  • For now, controversy is the only thing that surrounds this law where it is divided into those who are in favor and those who are not. On the part of the religious sector, they are confused since it is a Catholic president who is enacting these laws which go against their beliefs and the precepts of their religion.
